First Aid in the Shop

Shop Poem

If you are going to make anything with tools, however large or small, safety is first and common sense is not far behind. Everyone making anything should modify choice of wood, measurements, tools and techniques, fittings, and finish according to their own skills, preferences, needs, space, and circumstances.

Be prepared

For a quick response to injuries, a first aid kit in the shop is essential. Bandages, compresses, alcohol, soap, tape, cotton sticks and balls, medications, eyewash, and other necessary items should be stored in the kit.

Water in a small bucket is always handy as a diluter, extinguisher, thirst quencher, and all-around life saver in the shop.

Phone numbers of the local police and fire departments, nearby hospitals, and your personal physician should be posted in the shop.

Learn basic first aid responses such as resuscitation, recognizing the signs of shock, heart attack and stroke.

Taking steps to respond quickly to medical emergencies reduces fear and uncertainty. Know what to do in the event of an accident.

A little self help. The fire extinguisher is handy for very small jobs.

And other things

Protective equipment such as goggles, earplugs, masks and respirators, jackets and other clothing, toe-covering footwear, and gloves are essential. Learning safety warnings regarding tools, chemicals, particulates, and cleanliness of the work area is important. Heeding them is even better.

Rags used to apply oily finishes and wipe up spills should be securely stored or discarded safely to prevent smoldering and spontaneous combustion.

Don’t try to lift more than you are able. Be careful when handling sharp objects.

Remember: unnecessary or reckless acts inevitably result in injury or death. Yes, there is that word. Respect it.

Preparation and information reduces fear. Be confident and take care of yourself.
